Claude memory · PRIME

Claude's memory knows you.PRIME keeps the record.

Claude has memory built in, it comes with your plan, and you should keep it on. It learns who you are and what you tend to work on. PRIME has a different job. It writes down each decision, rule, and correction in your project the moment it's made, with the date, in a file in your own folder. Weeks later you can ask what you decided and get what actually happened, instead of what anyone remembers.

Just ask

"Do you remember when we talked about...?"

Ask the way you'd ask a coworker who was in the room. Claude looks in the record and answers with what was written down, and when.

Prime Memory · bakery-site
Three weeks later
YouDo you remember when we talked about delivery for the bakery site? I can't remember what we decided.
ClaudeYes. On October 14 you set the delivery fee at $5, then corrected it to $6 that afternoon. The $6 line is the current one. That same day you also set the order page to pickup only for now, so delivery isn't on the site yet. Want to turn it on?
YouYes, let's do it.

Claude's built-in memory
PRIME
What it saves
Topics about you and your work, chosen by Claude as you chat.
Each decision, rule, and correction in the project, as a dated line, the moment it's made.
Where it lives
In your Claude account. Claude Code keeps its own notes in a hidden folder in your user profile.
A plain text folder named Prime Memory, inside your project folder.
Can you read it?
Yes, topic by topic, under Settings, Memory.
Yes. Open it in Notepad, copy it, back it up with the rest of the project.
Cowork on your own computer
Anthropic's help page says Cowork sessions that run locally don't use memory.
Built for it. PRIME lives in the folder Cowork works in.
Cowork and Claude Code
Two separate memories.
One record in one folder, read by both.
When something changes
The memory is updated to the new version.
The new line goes in and the old one stays, dated, as history.
When it gets long
Claude Code loads the first 200 lines or 25KB of its memory index and keeps it short by merging or dropping old entries.
Older entries move to a reference list Claude can still search. Nothing is deleted.

Questions

Before you buy

Should I turn Claude's memory off?

No. Keep it on. PRIME leaves Claude's own memory alone, and the two run side by side.

What if the thing I'm asking about was never written down?

Claude tells you it isn't in the record. It doesn't fill the gap with a guess.

Is this comparison current?

It was checked against Anthropic's own pages on October 15, 2026. Claude changes often, so the sources are listed at the bottom of this page. If something here goes out of date, tell us at info@diakryon.com and we'll fix it.

Does PRIME work without a paid Claude plan?

No. PRIME runs in Cowork, which needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) and the Claude desktop app on Windows.
